The strength of DFN is the broad mandate of its members. With more than 300 institutional members, the majority of German universities, research institutions and research departments of commercial enterprises is committed to DFN.
Legal entities under private or public law who are expected to substantially contribute towards the purposes of the association can be admitted to DFN. Admittance is also possible for others who contribute to institutionally or otherwise publicly funded research.Representatives of the members meet twice a year, both to discuss the matters of DFN and to organize its future work. In particular, the members decide on the budget of the association and the share of costs for utilization of services. The representatives elect an executive committee whose three directors also make up the executive board of the association. All offices held with the association are voluntary.
