Security
The scientific community profits from a secure online environment in many regards. To achieve that goal, it needs security services that are specially focused on the specific needs for science and research. We support our participating institutions through a selection of services.

Information Security for Science and Research
With the DFN.Security service, we offer participating members a bundle of high-performance tools that can improve information security and run on participating member’s own IT infrastructure.
As a central hub for all relevant security information, the DFN.Security portal is available too all participating insitutions. You can find relevant information and services can be customized to meet your institution’s specific needs.

Trustworthy Communication
Seamless email functionality is a foundation for many processes in research and education. When it comes to processing emails, organizations need to not only take their respective technical and organizational needs into account; they also need to be aware of criminal and data security-relevant aspects.
With our DFN-MailSupport service, we develop, organize, and implement a service that reduces the volume of unwanted, malicious emails—be it spam or malware (viruses, worms, and trojans)—in Germany’s research network. These efforts, alongside the support of the email services used by participating institutions, contribute to a higher level of security across the research network as a whole.
Trust & Identity
Modern science and research thrives from cross-organizational collaboration. In order to make the most of their respective scientific resources, members need reliable, trustworthy mechanisms and processes to ensure user identities and access privileges in order to access these resources. We support participating members with our Trust and Identity services.

Easier Access to Protected Resources
We operate an authentication and authorization infrastructure (DFN-AAI) to enable users from science and research to access protected resources such as professional publications, research data, e-learning platforms, and countless other services. Users who need to access protected resources can authenticate their credentials at their home institutions, and after their information has been authorized, can access the resource in question.

Fast Access for Travelling Researchers
eduroam is a secure global WLAN access service developed for the international research and education community. It enables students, researchers, and staff at participating organizations fast, simple access to the international research network.

Trust Services for Science
With DFN-PKI, we organize a public-key infrastructure (PKI) that can display, distribute, and verify digital certificates. We use X.509 standards as a basis for certificates.
Many higher-education and research facilities use certificates in the service of safer communication, and their needs and challenges vary greatly. We manage PKIs for various trust and security levels ourselves and, in addition, offer access to the GÉANT Trusted Certificate Service (TCS).
