DFNFernsprechen at a Glance

The convergence of telephone and data networks

DFNFernsprechen offers Voice-over-IP-based connections that leverage the X-WiN research network and are calibrated to the needs of science and research.

The development of computer-aided information and communications systems is predicated on the vision of a convergence of different communications systems and networks (data networks, land-based telephone networks, mobile networks, etc). Internet protocol established itself as an important integration factor due to it being globally distributed and—at least in principle—in all networks and can be used for almost all applications and services.

The DFNFernsprechen service clears hurdles for including mobile service in this convergence. A framework agreement offers participants mobile voice, messaging, and data transfer services in contracts that are tailored to research and education. As an additional service module, DFNFernsprechen includes an SMS gateway for sending text messages to a mobile network in the form of SMS messages.

There are additional charges for participants who wish to use the DFNFernsprechen service. DFNFernsprechen offers flexible billing possibilities that are geared toward the needs of higher education institutions and research organizations and simplify organizational processes.

The following connection types are available:
